Tamil Nadu govt asks hospitals to train staff for paediatric emergencies to prepare for 3rd wave

A circular issued by DME has stated that in view of the reports regarding the third wave of Covid-19, which might affect children below 18 years, a set of instructions have been issued to the deans of medical institutions under the control of DME.

The instructions have stated that the nodal officer, preferably paediatricians, will make necessary preparedness for the possible onset of Covid wave in the future.

Each institution has been asked to keep 100 beds ready with oxygen facility and monitors for ICU care for children. No paediatrician or staff nurse of the pediatric ward can be posted out of regular duty rotation, according to the new guidelines.

A minimum of 1/4th of staff nurses at the hospitals should be trained in batches to attend to emergencies in the pediatric ward.

The medical officers of General Medicine and Anesthesia have also been asked to be trained to handle pediatric emergencies in batches, apart from paediatricians.

The deans and heads of institutions have been requested to implement the guidelines immediately and furnish action taken reports to the Directorate of Medical Education.
